Chapter 10: The Hearing

"Call them," I said.

Noreen's thumb stopped on her phone.

"Call the whole pack," I said. "I'll be there."

Rance looked at me sideways.

He didn't say no. He didn't say anything.

He just swung up on the grulla and waited for me.

Noreen laughed.

"Seven o'clock," she said. "Bring the gray mare. Save us all the trip."

The Jessup hall was a log meeting house behind the main barn, older than the ranch house.

It had a stone fireplace at one end and benches down both walls, and seventy wolves can fill it to the rafters.

That night they did.

The Bridgers came too.

Rance had said it at supper, and every one of his nineteen had put down their forks and gone for their coats. Gran rode in the front of the truck with her purse on her knees.

We stood together by the door. Nineteen wolves in feed-store jackets, in a room full of seventy.

Nobody sat down.

Noreen stood in front of the fireplace in a black dress.

Coy stood at her shoulder with his thumbs in his belt.

Kacey sat on the end of the front bench in a gray sweater, staring at her boots.

The old Alpha's wheelchair was parked in the corner by the fire. A woman in nurse's scrubs stood behind it.

His good eye found me and held.

"We all know why we're here," Noreen said. "Shiloh Rawlins lived in this house five years. She ate our food. She slept in my son's bed."

Somebody on the Bridger side growled low. Rance didn't even turn his head, and it stopped.

"When Coy chose a Luna," Noreen said, "Shiloh walked out of his wedding and into his brother-in-law's bed. In front of you all."

She let the room murmur.

"Jessup law is plain. Take what she brought, then. Her stock, her wages, her tack." She looked at me. "And anything bought with them since."

"Like a gray mare," Coy said.

A few of his friends laughed.

I stepped out into the middle of the floor.

I could feel every eye in the hall on me. My wolf wanted to drop her head and her tail.
