Chapter 25: Stripped

The dun threw her head up.

Behind me at the edge of the timber, Tonka squealed and the grulla started backing into the trees.

A wolf in the open, with its teeth out, a few yards from three horses.

Rance pushed the dun's lead rope into my hand.

"Hold them," he said.

"Rance."

"He called me out in the circle. If I don't answer, every Jessup on this hill decides what Bridgers are worth." He was already pulling his coat off. "Hold the horses, Rawlins. That's all I need from you."

I put my hand on the dun's face and let my wolf sit down.

All the way down. Flat on the ground, the way she does when a foal is being born.

The dun's head came down.

At the trees, Tonka stopped pulling. The grulla stopped backing.

The old Alpha sat in the saddle above me with his good hand white on the horn.

Rance stepped over the stones.

He didn't take his eyes off the pale wolf.

He dropped his shirt and his boots and the rest, and went down.

He came up black and silver and half again as big as Coy.

He didn't growl.

He just stood there.

Coy came at him in one long leap, straight for his face.

Rance turned his shoulder into it.

They hit. The sound went off the hillside.

Teeth. Snarling. Lantern light on fur.

Coy got his jaws in the top of Rance's left shoulder, right in the old bronc scar, and hung on.

Rance shook him off.

Then Rance had him.

He didn't go for the throat.

He went over the top of him and took him by the scruff behind the ears.

He put him flat on the white stones with his whole weight.

And held him there.

Coy thrashed.

Rance held him.

Coy twisted and snapped at nothing and clawed at the grass.

Rance held him.

Nobody on that bench made a sound.

It went on until Coy's legs stopped moving.

Then, slowly, the pale wolf rolled half over under the black one and showed his belly to the moon.

Rance let go.

He stepped back off him and stood there, blowing, with blood running black down his shoulder.

He'd had the throat right there the whole time, and every wolf on the hill knew it.

Coy came back into his skin face-down in the circle.
