Chapter 17: One Mug

Judd walked out of the great hall beside me with two hundred wolves watching.

He didn't go up to his room.

He didn't pack.

He walked straight down the front steps, across the lawn and down the drive, and I walked with him.

Halfway to the trees, Ket's fiancee came running after us with a duffel bag.

She was small and dark-haired and out of breath, and I'd never heard her say a word before.

"Ket told me to pack for you if this happened," she said, and pushed the bag at Judd. "Socks, shirts, your good boots. She said you'd forget the socks."

"I would have," Judd said.

"She also said to tell you you're both idiots and she loves you."

"Tell her the bars look good on her."

She almost laughed.

Then she looked at me, and breathed in, and her eyes went wide.

"Huh," she said. "So it's real."

"It's real."

"Ket's going to be unbearable."

She jogged back up the drive.

That night, Judd stood in the middle of my room with his duffel on his shoulder and looked at the bed.

It was a single.

It had been too small for both of us twice already.

"I don't know where you're going to put your socks," I said.

"I'm thinking about the bed."

"You've been fine in that bed."

"I've been fine on top of you in that bed," he said. "Living in it is different."

He set the duffel down.

He took hold of the mattress and pulled it off the frame and laid it on the floor under the window.

Then he stood back and looked pleased with himself.

"There," he said. "Now nobody falls off."

"That's the stupidest thing I've ever seen."

"Come here and say that."

"Come here and say that."

I crossed the room and shoved him.

He went down exactly the way I wanted him to, flat on his back on that stupid mattress, laughing before he hit the quilt.

I landed on top of him.

Straddled his hips and pinned his wrists beside his head and looked down at him.

"Now say it," I said. "It's the stupidest thing I've ever seen."

"It's the stupidest thing you've ever seen," he said, and his hips came up under me and I felt how hard he was already, and my smart answer died in my throat.
