Chapter 14: The Cold Room

Roscoe read the first statement standing in the doorway with his daughter asleep on his shoulder.

"Kendra was eight," I said. "Mavis was sixty-one. Neither one of them ever saw me lock up anything but the pie case."

"I have to take it seriously," the caseworker said. "I'm sorry. It's a sworn statement."

"So's mine," Roscoe said. "You want it now or after coffee?"

She almost smiled.

"After coffee would be good."

Posy woke up on the kitchen floor with a cracker crumb on her cheek and the owl hood still on.

She saw the woman in the navy fleece at our table.

She went still as a rabbit in a hay field.

"She's here to talk to everybody," I said. "You don't have to say anything."

I made bear-face pancakes for four.

The caseworker watched Posy eat the nose first.

She watched Posy check her father's chest twice between bites.

When the plates were empty, she set her folder on the chair beside her.

"I'd like to sit with Posy by myself," she said. "Just a few minutes. Mr. and Mrs. Ketchum, would you wait on the porch?"

Posy's head came up.

She looked at me.
