Chapter 18: Eight Bars

"You know," I repeated.

Posy nodded and ate the nose off her pancake.

Roscoe looked at me across the table with his red nose and his cold-medicine eyes.

"Well," he said. "Sign-ups are tomorrow after school. I'll wash my truck."

"You'll stay in bed."

"I'll wash my truck," he said, "and I'll stand in that music room and breathe as loud as I can."

The music room at Alder Creek Elementary was an old classroom off the gym, with risers along one wall and an upright piano.

At three-thirty Wednesday it was full of parents.

The patty-melt mother was there with all three of hers.

So was the girl in the purple glasses, holding her mother's hand and waving at Posy with her whole arm.

Bonnie sat at the piano bench in a red Christmas cardigan with a clipboard on her knee.

The music teacher, a young man with a guitar, stood beside her.

"Lovely," Bonnie said when she saw us. "The whole family."

"Posy wants to sign up," I said.

The room went quiet.

Bonnie looked at Posy.

Posy stood between Roscoe and me in her red boots with both hands wrapped around one of mine.
