Chapter 23: Guilty

I didn't answer him right away.

I stood on the porch with the phone against my ear and watched Posy through the kitchen window.

She was teaching the gray kitten to sit, with a piece of bacon, and losing.

"She doesn't have to come," the attorney said. "Nobody can make a six-year-old come to a plea. I'd advise against it."

"So would I," I said. "But I'm going to ask her anyway."

That night, at supper, I asked her plainly whether she wanted to go see Aunt Bonnie in court.

Roscoe set down his coffee and waited, the way he'd learned to.

Posy put her fork down and thought about it with her whole face.

"Will she talk to me?"

"She might try."

"Do I have to talk back?"

"Not one word," Roscoe said. "Not unless you want to."

Posy picked her fork back up.

"I want to go," she said. "I want to see her not be able to make me."

The courtroom in the county seat had wooden benches and a seal on the wall behind the judge.

It was full.

The patty-melt mother and the co-op men were there, and the principal in a black coat.

The pastor and his wife sat in the second row, right behind us.
