Chapter 10: Lockup

"Sworn under oath," Colter said quietly, reading over my shoulder.

I did not answer.

I was looking at the line for previous marriages, and at the word none, and at the date on the license.

It was the same spring Tim came home from a trip and kissed me in the kitchen.

He had told me to pick a venue for our wedding.

"Colter, can I tell you something strange?"

"Always."

"Nine years ago, Tim and I drove across the country in a borrowed car."

"I remember the story. It's in your founder bio. Well, his founder bio."

"We stopped in Reno for a night," I said.

"We were twenty-two and twenty-four and out of money."

"There was a chapel on Virginia Street with a neon sign, and we went in as a joke."

I took my wallet from my bag and opened the card slot.

The certificate was soft as cloth.

Gold edge, curly type, two signatures and a stamp from the chapel.

"Tim told me it was a souvenir," I said.

"He said you have to file the license at the county for it to count, and we never did."

"He said we'd do it properly someday."

"I kept it because it was the best night of my life."

Colter took it from me with two fingers and read it under the foyer light.

I watched his face change.

"Who told Sienna about this?" he asked.
