Chapter 12: The Offer

I told the polished voice on the phone that I would think about it.

I hung up before he could say the word reconcile again.

Colter watched me from the pillow.

"You're not going," he said.

"I'm not going to coffee."

"Then what are you going to do?"

"Nothing," I said.

"He's offering me a title I earned nine years ago, and he's doing it because he is afraid."

"I want to know of what."

"I can find out."

"You'll find out what the records say. I want to see his face when he says it himself."

He pushed himself up on one elbow and studied me.

"That's cold."

"It's accurate."

I dressed in the dress from the night before.

He found me a gray sweater of his that came to my knees.

I took the subway to Maggie's at seven in the morning.

It was a good ride.

I leaned my head against the window and thought about nothing at all.

Maggie was at the stove when I came in, in scrubs, scraping eggs onto two plates.

"Walk of shame," she said without turning around. "Gray sweater, no bra, and a smile you can't hide. Sit."

"It wasn't shame."

"I know. That's why I'm happy for you. Eat."

I ate.

I told her about the record in the glass office, and about the stamp that said RECORDED.

She sat down with her plate and forgot to eat hers.

"Han," she said finally. "You're married."

"Apparently."

"To Tim."

"And he's married to..."

"Nobody," I said. "He's not married to anyone. He can't be."

Maggie put down her fork.

"Oh my God," she said very quietly. "He's a bigamist. He gave a speech about it. On a roof."
