Chapter 14: The Price

Colter's POV

Tim asked me to dinner by text, and I knew what he wanted before I sat down.

He had picked a steakhouse with booths high enough that nobody could see over them.

He had ordered for both of us.

"The ribeye," he said, standing up to shake my hand. "Trust me."

I let him pour the wine and did not drink it.

I had been Tim's board member for six years, and I had never once seen him eat without watching the person across from him.

He did it now, over the bread, with a smile.

"You've been a good friend to this company," he said.

"I'm a director."

"A friend," he said. "I want to make that more official."

He slid a single sheet across the tablecloth.

It was a letter of intent, on Fieldwork letterhead, signed.

My fund would get a right to buy four times its current stake at the IPO price, and a second seat on the board.

The number at the bottom was larger than anything Lantern Row had ever been offered.

I read it twice, slowly.

"What do I have to do?" I asked.

"Nothing," Tim said. "Stop. That's all."

"Stop what?"

"Stop standing next to her."

He said it gently, like advice.

"Hannah is a gifted engineer who's having a breakdown," he said. "She's confused and she's angry, and she's been looking for someone to hold on to. I understand. I even feel for her."

"You fired her in front of two hundred people."

"I made a hard call for the company."

I folded the letter in half.
