Chapter 16: Her Terms

He was waiting in the living room with the lights off and the city spread out behind him.

I shut the door of the fifty-ninth floor and stood with my back against it.

"My terms," I said.

"Say them."

"One. You tell me everything in the first minute, from now on. No more waiting until it's safe."

"Done."

"Two. I lead."

His eyes went pale gold in the dark.

"Done."

"Three." My voice wobbled, and I made it stop.

"You stay until morning. You don't leave a room I'm in before I wake up."

He looked at me a long moment.

"Wynne. I'll be here when you wake."

"Four. Your rule. That night does not exist."

"I broke that rule in a stairwell."

"Then this one does," I said, and crossed the room.

I put both hands flat on his chest and pushed him backward until his knees hit the long sofa, and he sat.

He looked up at me.

He let me stand over him and unbutton his shirt one button at a time.

"Hands behind your head," I said.

He put them there, slowly.

I saw the muscle in his arm flex and the vein jump in his throat.

I pulled off my sweater and my bra and dropped them on the floor, and his breath caught.

"You're allowed to say it," I said.

"You're beautiful."

"Again."

"You're the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, and I have been out of my mind for ten weeks."

I knelt over him on the sofa and kissed him, long and slow, until he groaned into my mouth.
