Chapter 5: The Scentless Floor
The elevator to the top floor took less than a minute and my ears popped twice.
The human resources director did not speak.
When the doors opened, the air changed.
It smelled of nothing.
No coffee, no carpet, no cologne, no people.
My wolf lifted her head, confused, and I realized I couldn't smell the woman standing next to me.
"The executive floors are scrubbed," the director said. "Sealed vents, filtered air. Nobody here can read anyone else."
She led me past a desk and through a pair of tall doors, and then she left.
Dashiell Crane stood at the window with his back to me.
He wore a black suit, and the grey water of the sound spread out behind him.
I had pictured this a hundred ways on the ferry.
In some of them, he crossed the room and said my name.
In some of them, he was sorry.
He turned around.
His face did not move.
"Miss Tarrant," he said. "Sit down."
I sat.
He sat behind the desk, opened a folder, and read from it in a flat voice.
"Executive assistant. Seven a.m. to seven p.m., some evenings. Calendar, calls, travel, and anything I tell you to handle. Salary on the sheet. Health plan from day one. Questions?"
"Yes," I said. "Is this a joke?"
"No."
"Then why was the position held for me?"
"It wasn't," he said, and he did not blink. "The director overstates. You were the best applicant."
"She read my name twice."
"It's an unusual name."
"Mr. Crane," I said. "We have met."
