Chapter 7: The Lobby

I went down to the lobby on Thursday to sign for a courier, and Jared was sitting on the white leather bench with a gift basket.

Bree sat beside him in a pink coat, holding his arm.

I stopped halfway across the marble floor.

The lobby of Crane Tower is three stories high, with a long black security desk.

Forty people were crossing it with coffee, badges and phones.

Jared looked up and gave me his best smile.

"Wynne!" he said, loudly. "There she is. We've been looking everywhere."

"That's funny," I said. "I haven't moved."

"My mother wants you home." He stood and held out the basket. "She says all is forgiven. We can put the whole thing behind us."

Bree rose beside him with her eyes already full.

"I was so scared, Wynne," she said. "I didn't know how to tell you. I never meant it to happen like that."

"You wore the ring to my engagement party."

"It was Winifred's idea." She shook her head. "She said it would be gentler."

"Gentler," I said.

"Look, Wynne, we need a favor too." Jared dropped his voice, which meant everyone leaned in. "The dock contract. Howling Bay's cannery is going under without Crane Harbor's lane. You work here. Just a word to the boss."

He had not come to take me home.

He had come to use me.

For one dizzy second I was angry enough to laugh.

"Mr. Crane's calendar is full through spring," I said, in the voice I used for table nine. "You can leave your request with the desk."
