Chapter 8: Say It

I waited until the lobby had emptied and the elevator had carried me back up sixty floors.

Then I walked into Dashiell's office without knocking and shut the double doors behind me.

He looked up from a file.

"You have a calendar to manage, Miss Tarrant."

"Why did you come to the Gardens that night?"

His pen stopped.

"I told you. Business."

"Bree says it was something more."

"Miss Danvers has very little to say that is worth hearing."

"She said it quietly," I said. "In a lobby full of people. She meant it."

He put the pen down, very precisely, and rose.

"That subject does not exist in this office."

"Everything about that night doesn't exist. I know. You told me." I walked toward his desk. "You told me in a flat voice, across a desk."

"Wynne."

It was the second time he had said my name.

It made me angrier.

"No," I said. "You don't get to say it like that and then act like you never said it at all. You left me in that bed."

His face did not change.

"I had a call."

"At five in the morning."

"Yes."

"You left no note. You left a clerk and a paid room, as if you were settling a bill." My voice shook, and I let it. "Do you know what it was like, walking out of that hotel alone, with my shoes in my hand? I went looking for the one person I thought, the one person who'd..."

I stopped, because my throat closed.

He had come around the desk without a sound.

He stood very close.

I could see the pulse jumping at the side of his neck, and I could see that his hands had curled into fists.
