Chapter 7: The List Is Mine

The ambulance came fast, and Orin rode in the front seat because nobody told him not to.

I lay on the stretcher with a paramedic's hand on my wrist and the roof lights sliding over me.

Maeve met us at the hospital doors in her scrubs.

She had come down from the fourth floor at a run, and her hair was stuck up on one side.

"Don't talk," she said. "Don't be brave. Let them work."

"Leander," I said.

"Is not coming through these doors," Maeve said. "Not tonight."

Three hours later, I lay in a dim room on the maternity floor with a monitor strapped across my belly.

The same tall doctor from my checkup sat on the edge of the bed with my chart.

"Good news first," she said. "It was a small tear high up, and it has sealed. You have fluid, you have a heartbeat, and the baby is not coming tonight."

I let my head fall back on the pillow.

"Bad news is that you're staying here for three days. You get a steroid shot for her lungs, and your pressure gets watched every hour. If it leaks again, we deliver."

"How early?"

"She would be thirty-three weeks." She said it evenly. "She'd be small, but she would be fine."

"I'd like to keep her in until thirty-six."

"So would I."

A nurse came in with a clipboard and a gentle, tired face.

"I need your visitor list, Mrs. Prescott," she said. "Anyone who can come in, and anyone who can't."

I looked at the blank lines.

For three years every form I filled out had one name beside mine.

"Maeve Brannigan," I wrote. "My sister. She has full access, including to my chart."

"And?"
