Chapter 9: Her Road, My Road

Orin's POV

I hauled two hundred traps before breakfast and caught nothing I could sell.

It was the fifth morning since the hospital, and my hands knew the work without me.

My mind was on the porch across the road.

I had never noticed which of Maeve's windows faced my kitchen until Gwendolyn slept behind one of them.

Now I knew which one lit up at two in the morning when the baby would not settle.

I knew she got up to pace the hall in Maeve's old sweatshirt, one hand under her belly, and that she hummed when she thought nobody was listening.

I knew I was in trouble.

I brought the boat in at ten and tied her up.

Maeve was waiting on the dock with two coffees and her night-shift face.

"Garrick," she said. "You look terrible."

"Thank you."

"You've been watching my house."

"I've been watching the road."

"Mm."

She gave me a coffee and sat on a bollard with her knees apart.

"I need you to say something out loud," she said. "Because she's my sister and I'm too tired to guess."

I drank the coffee.

It was awful, and I drank all of it.

"She'll go back to him," I said.

Maeve stared at me.

"That's what you're going to say?"

"They always do. A man kneels on a sidewalk and says he was wrong, and the kid's coming, and his family has money, and her whole life is in that house." I turned the cup in my hands. "I'm not going to stand in the way of that. I'll bring wood. I'll fix your gutters. I'm not going to put my hands on a woman who's going to be in his car by Christmas."
