Chapter 21: The Gala
The Langhorn winter gala filled the ballroom of the Plaza with four hundred people in black and gold.
I stood behind the curtain in a rented tuxedo, with a grey drive in my hand.
On the other side of the velvet, Victor Langhorn was giving his speech.
"Forty years," he said. "Forty years, and the house stands."
The room applauded.
"Mason."
I turned.
My old booker stood in the dark by the lighting desk, in her grey blazer, with a headset around her neck.
She was the woman who had written, "I'm not allowed to talk to you."
"I'm allowed now," she said.
"You could lose your job."
"I seconded the motion. I have already lost it." She held out her hand. "Give it to me."
I gave her the drive.
She slid it into the machine, tapped three keys, and nodded at the screen above the stage, forty feet of black glass.
