Chapter 22: The Fall
Victor Langhorn ran.
I had known him for eight years, and I had never seen him run.
He threw the cane aside, and it clattered across the stage and rolled off the edge.
His shoes slapped the boards, and his coat flew open, and he was fast for a man of seventy-one.
He did not need the cane.
He had never needed it, and four hundred people watched him prove it.
The cable lay across the stage in a black loop.
He was reaching for it with both hands when his foot caught it.
He went down hard.
He slid on his chest across the polished boards, past the footlights, and over the lip of the stage.
He dropped four feet and landed on the dance floor in front of the first table.
He was on his hands and knees, with his silver hair in his eyes.
Nobody moved.
On the screen above him, his own face was still looking down at a dying man.
"Victor," said a woman near the front, in a stunned voice, and she did not say it as a greeting.
