Chapter 13: Wait

He didn't stand up.

He sat on the floor with his back against the bed and looked at the phone in my hand.

"Yes," he said.

"Say the rest."

"She came to my office on the Tuesday before the gala." His voice was very level. "She put a bolt on my desk. Snapped. She said the crown was bad."

"And?"

"And the loan closed on Monday. The bank would have walked."

"So you told her to wait."

"I told her to wait until after the ribbon. Four days. Then we'd fix it quietly, at night, and nobody would ever know."

"Four days," I said.

"There were five hundred people in that lobby."

"I know how many people were in that lobby, Reagan."

It was the first time he'd ever raised his voice at me.

He heard it, and he put his face in his hands.

The scars on his palms were right there, pressed against his eyes.

"That's what the fight was," I said. "At the gala. In front of forty people."

"She told me I was a coward in front of the mayor's wife." He didn't lift his head. "I told her to stop making a scene. I told her to go home."

"And she went up."

"And she went up."

I stood there in his sheet with her phone, and her voice still in my ears, and his hands on his face.

"You let me find it," I said.

He looked up.

"You let me sit on your floor and type in that number. You let me press play."

"I couldn't say it out loud."

"You said you'd tell me when you could prove what came after."

"I meant it."

"What does that even mean?"

"It means she didn't just fall." His jaw was tight. "I've known that for seven years. She clipped in every time. Every single time, Reagan. She was the most careful person I ever met."
