Chapter 29: The Old Crown
The service hoist on Strahan Tower ran up the north side of the crown, a steel cage on a rail.
At a quarter to midnight the night guard unlocked it for us and didn't ask a single question.
Anson stood in the cage in a dark coat with two harnesses over his arm.
"You brought harnesses," I said.
"I brought harnesses."
He held one out to me.
I took it, and stepped into it, and cinched every strap.
Then I turned him around and checked his.
He let me.
"Tighter," I said, and pulled the leg strap until he grunted.
"You're enjoying this."
"Every second."
The cage lurched and climbed.
Then we were inside the crown.
Open steel all around, black against the city lights. Wind coming through the lattice from the river.
The cage stopped at the catwalk.
I clipped my lanyard to the lifeline before my boot touched the grating.
Then I reached over and clipped his.
He watched my hands do it.
"Every time," I said.
"Every time," he said.
We walked out onto the catwalk.
