Chapter 9: The Dunn Family Heirloom

Lena's POV

Harrison was back at the apartment in twenty minutes, with his tie in his pocket and his hair wrong.

I was sitting on the kitchen counter in his shirt, with my phone in my hand.

I held up the screen.

"Who's the woman?" I asked.

"Cynthia."

He took out his own phone and gave it to me, and I read her text from five twelve that morning.

"Breakfast. Alone. The place on First."

"I said no to all of it," he said. "She'll take it to the board now."

"The board."

"By the end of the week."

I looked at him for a while.

"You carried your shoes out of the bedroom," I said.

"I didn't want to wake you."

"That's the nicest thing a man has done to me in a year, and you did it at dawn on the way to a fight with your stepmother."

The corner of his mouth moved.

"Camille found me afterward," he said. "She had something to say about Dylan."

"What did she say?"

"That he talks when he drinks."

It was a small answer, and it was true, and I had the feeling there was a second answer behind it.

We had a rule about that. No lies between us in private.

I decided it was enough for now.

I made myself stop looking at his hands.

"Harrison," I said.

"Yes."

"Last night."

"Yes?"

"I'm not going to pretend it was a mistake just because the sun came up."

He set his phone down on the counter very carefully.

"I would be disappointed," he said.

I was not a woman who blushed in a kitchen, but I did, and he saw it.
