Chapter 10: Then Go
Darius knocked at eight the next evening, with a paper bag from the bakery on the corner.
Elsie opened the door with Wyatt on her shoulder and a burp cloth over her other arm.
"I wasn't sure you'd let me in," he said.
"I wasn't sure either."
She stepped back, and he came in and set the bag on the counter.
The studio looked smaller with him standing in it.
His shoulders nearly touched the shelf over the stove.
"Croissants," he said. "I didn't know what you can eat."
"I can eat anything. I'm a person."
"Understood."
She put Wyatt in his crib and Nora in hers, and when she turned around, Darius was still standing in the middle of the room with his hands at his sides.
"You can sit," she said.
He sat on the edge of the only chair.
"The night I called you," Elsie said, "you didn't ask me one question. Not about the twins, not about why I'd left, not about Trent."
"No."
"I told you no questions. You obeyed."
"I did."
"Good. Now I get to ask one."
He waited.
She stood with her back against the counter and her arms folded.
"Six years ago I came to the office, and I told my father I was leaving. I stood in his doorway and said it to his face. He didn't look up."
"I remember."
"You were standing behind him. You looked at me. I waited for you to say something."
"Elsie."
"I waited a long time. And then you spoke."
"Then go."
"Then go." She said it back flat. "Why?"
His jaw moved.
"Because he'd ordered me to," he said. "That morning. If you tried to leave, I was to let you."
