Chapter 7: The Empty Chair
By nine the next morning, the video had two million views.
It was thirty seconds long, filmed from the press table.
It showed Elsie in a green dress, holding up a phone, and Darius Ames saying "Arthur Winslow's daughter" to a silent ballroom.
The headline under it said: THE HEIRESS WHO WALKED OUT.
Elsie read it at the kitchen counter with Wyatt on her shoulder and decided she hated every word.
Her phone rang, and it was Imogen.
"Oh my God, love, are you okay? Everyone is talking about it."
"Imogen. Trent knew who my father was."
There was a short silence.
"What do you mean, knew?"
"He told me to ask my stepmother. I never told him her name. I never told him anything."
"Oh, Elsie." Imogen's voice shook. "I swear I never said a word. Not once. I'd cut my tongue out."
"I know you wouldn't."
"He must have found the divorce papers in your files. You used your old address on the forms. Anyone who looked would have found it."
It was a reasonable answer, and Elsie could not make herself believe it all the way.
"I think that's right," she said.
"Do you want me to come over?"
"I'm going to the Winslow office."
"Now?" Imogen's voice sharpened for half a second and then softened again. "Honey, are you sure? You just had twins."
"I'm bringing them."
Darius's car was waiting at the curb at ten.
He did not ask what she wanted, and she did not tell him until they were in the elevator of a glass tower on the river, with the double stroller between them.
"I want to see the people who'll vote," she said. "I want to see their faces."
"They'll be rude."
"I counted on that."
The boardroom was on the forty-first floor, with a table long enough for twenty and a window full of the city.
