Chapter 6: Rules of Vetting
"He cried at a dog food commercial," Bea said.
"Who?"
"Perry Teller. In the sixth grade. It was a golden retriever on a beach."
"That's not a crime."
"I didn't say it was a crime. I said he cried." Bea topped off my coffee with the pot she wasn't supposed to carry around. "You can't sleep with a guy who cries at dog food."
"I haven't decided to sleep with anyone."
"You have a list."
"I have a list of options."
It was Tuesday, one in the afternoon, and the Harbor Diner smelled like hash browns and old coffee.
Bea Sorensen has a blond braid as thick as my wrist and the voice of a woman who calls the dinner rush from the back door.
She is my best friend, and she has never once lied to me.
I find it exhausting.
"Is Ansel on board with the list?" she said.
"He's the quality inspector."
"Of course he is."
"What does that mean?"
"It means he's the world's most overqualified guard dog," Bea said. "Here he comes."
The bell over the door jingled.
Ansel ducked under the doorframe the way he always does, though it's seven feet high.
He had a notebook in his back pocket, a pencil behind his ear, and a streak of grease across one cheekbone.
He slid into the booth next to me, and his knee pressed mine, and I decided not to notice.
"Who's the girl from last winter?" Bea said.
He had just picked up a menu.
He put it down.
"What?"
"Last winter. You told Lottie you'd been with someone. She hasn't shut up about it since Friday."
"I haven't said a word," I said.
"Your eyebrows have."
