Chapter 15: The Offer
Peg locked the diner at nine and turned the sign to CLOSED.
I was wiping down the counter when someone knocked on the glass.
Orrin stood on the sidewalk with his hat in one hand and a paper bag in the other.
I let him in.
"Left this in the cottage," he said, and held out the bag. "Figured you'd want it."
Inside was my winter scarf and the printed picture from the clinic, the small gray comma on the white square.
I held the picture and could not speak.
"I didn't look at it," Orrin said. "Well, I looked."
Behind him, headlights swung across the window.
A black pickup stopped at the curb, and Dalton got out with a folder under his arm.
He came in, and Peg stepped out of the kitchen with a rolling pin.
"That's far enough," she said.
"I'm here to do business, Peg. Put it down."
"I'll put it down on your head."
