Chapter 20: The Old Pine
He carried me out of the ring, past the stones, and into the trees.
The noise of the packs fell away behind us.
The moon came through the black pines in white shafts, and the ground was dark and soft with needles.
He stopped under the biggest tree on the ridge, an old pine with bark like armor.
He put me on my feet with my back against it.
"Don't be gentle," I said.
"Ione."
"I mean it."
His eyes were bright and wild and wet.
"You were bleeding."
"It's closed already."
"You stood in front of a wolf with silver."
He slammed his palm against the bark beside my head.
"I couldn't breathe."
"I know. Now do something about it."
He kissed me.
It wasn't a kiss.
It was a collision, all teeth, with a taste of blood, and I fisted both hands in his hair and hauled him in.
My bare back scraped the bark.
I didn't care.
He tore at his clothes, buttons popping, until he was as bare as I was.
I dragged my nails across his chest and heard him hiss.
