Chapter 19: Soup

Lester brought the recipe card over in a sandwich bag.

It was an index card gone soft as cloth, with a butter stain in one corner and my mother's slanted handwriting across the front.

Finley held it under the kitchen light and read it aloud.

"Two onions, sliced thin. Butter, don't be shy. Chicken, whole, with the bone. Thyme from the pot on the sill."

"The pot's dead," Lester said from the doorway.

"Then what do I use?"

"A dried one from the market. It's a sin, but she'd forgive it."

"What about the rest?"

"It says what it says," said Lester, and folded his arms. "I'm not touching your soup, Finley. She'd come back and haunt me."

I lay upstairs under the quilt, with my door open to the sound of it.

Finley took off his jacket and rolled his sleeves to the elbow.

I had never seen him use a knife for anything but a steak.

He cut the first onion, and his eyes streamed, and he wiped them with the back of his wrist.

"I'm not crying," he said.

"I didn't say anything."

"It's the onion."

"It's the onion," I agreed.

The pot hit the burner with a bang.

The butter went in, and it sizzled so hard it spat across the stove.

"Is that supposed to do that?" he called.

"Turn it down!" Lester said.

"Which way?"

"The little number!"

Smoke came off the pan in a long gray ribbon.

The smoke alarm in the hall began to scream.
