Chapter 6: Light

"Put me down," I said.

"No."

Finley carried me out of the elevator and across the lobby and past a security guard who did not dare to stop him.

Lester trotted behind us with my coat and the keys.

I took his hand and stood.

I saw the moment his fingers closed around my wrist and found the bones.

He held it a second too long.

Then he looked down, and I looked down.

My bag had fallen open on the seat.

An orange pill bottle lay half out of it, with a pharmacy label and my name.

He picked it up and read the label.

"Oxycodone," he said.

"Yes."

"Where did you get this?"
