Chapter 9: February

"Dr. ..." Finley started.

"Let's go back to my office," the oncologist said.

"No," I said.

Both men looked at me.

"Here is fine," I said. "I'd like to hear it here."

The oncologist glanced at the room.

The woman in the green headscarf had stopped knitting.

The man in the flannel shirt had lowered his magazine.

The receptionist stood very still behind her glass.

"Mrs. Hollister," the doctor said. "This is private health information."

"Then he can leave."

"I have the right to stay," Finley said, hoarsely. "I'm her husband."

"Yes, you are," the doctor said, and there was nothing gentle in it. "You were listed as her emergency contact eight months ago. That's why I called you."

He turned the chart in his hands.

"On February eleventh, at four in the afternoon, I phoned Mr. Hollister at the number on file. I told him his wife had stage four renal cell carcinoma with spread to the lymph nodes. I told him she had a year, likely less, and that she needed him with her."

Finley's face was perfectly white.

"I told him she asked me to call," the doctor said. "She was afraid to say it herself."

I had not known he would say that.

I had not known I'd asked it.

I'd been so drugged by the scan results that I had asked a nurse to write one number on a form, and then I'd forgotten.
