Chapter 14: The Father
For a moment I could not make a sound.
My father stood on the porch with snow on his shoulders and his hands open at his sides.
He was thinner than in June.
There was gray at his temples that had not been there when he left.
"Dad," I said.
Behind me, Rhys let out a low sound, half growl and half breath.
My father looked past me at the two boys, and then at the two black seals on the table.
"Don't hurt him," I told them, without turning. "Not until I've finished."
"Finished what?" Rhys said.
"Hurting him myself."
My father's mouth moved, and I think it was almost a smile.
"May I come in?" he asked.
"Four months," I said.
"Juniper."
"Four months, and a note with one line on it, and I slept in a car."
"I know where you slept," he said quietly. "I sat in the pines across lot C on eleven nights and watched your windows fog."
Something hot climbed my throat.
