Chapter 24: Claw and Fang
The Alpha spoke first.
He stood by the brazier with his coat open and his eyes on the blood-spotted ice, and then he looked at his son.
"The Kendricks vote to end it," he said.
A sound went round the wolves.
"My son lay on that ice and would not yield to me," the Alpha said.
"A man who cannot break his own son does not need a law to do it for him."
Rhys opened his mouth, and I squeezed his hand until he shut it.
All eyes turned west.
The Regent had not moved.
He stood with his silver head bowed, looking at the hand that had once held a black blade.
Beside him, Lucian said nothing.
He only waited, the way he had waited in the library at three in the morning.
"I was taught," said the Regent slowly, "that a court is kept by what it refuses."
"Father," said Lucian.
"I am learning that it can also be kept by what it forgives."
He lifted his head.
"The Ashgrave court votes to end the Sunder Law," he said. "And I withdraw my son's renunciation, if he will let me."
