Chapter 8: Gale Capital

I found Preston on the dining hall steps, in the thin afternoon sun, surrounded by his friends.

He was telling them it had been a misunderstanding.

He stopped when I came out the door.

"Pengelly," he said, and flashed me the old smile. "Hey. That was a lot in there. We should talk."

"We are talking," I said. "Your father's company took my house."

"My father's company took a lot of houses," Preston said. "That's what a lender does."

Two of his friends laughed, but they did it nervously, looking around.

I could see phones coming up along the steps, one at a time.

Brielle slid out of the doorway and took his arm.

"Don't," she told him quietly.

"No, it's fine," Preston said, and shook her off. "She wants to talk. Let's talk."

He stepped down so that we were face to face.

"You think I was slumming with you in September?" he said, in a voice low enough that only I could hear.

"Excuse me?"

"I dated you for five weeks. Do you honestly believe I'd waste five weeks?"

I stared at him.

"My father bought your dad's note in the spring," Preston said. "Then your dad vanished, and you can't collect on a man who isn't there."

"So you were told to find him through me," I said slowly.

"I was told to keep you close. I sat in the library with you for hours," Preston said. "And you never once mentioned where he went. That's the part I can't forgive."
