Chapter 23: The Wrong Column
Craig did not hesitate.
That was the thing about Craig Beckman: he had never once hesitated in front of a camera.
He crossed the floor in his camel coat with the bruise glowing on his jaw.
He unrolled the set across the long model table, on top of Declan's envelope.
"This is the atrium," he said, brightly. "The heart of the scheme."
It was the seashell stair, drawn clean, every plate in a tidy hand that wasn't Eli's.
"Four floors of daylight, falling into the children's reading room. I developed it over several weeks."
"You developed it," the chair said.
"With the team, of course. But yes. It's mine."
Eli heard Declan's breath stop and start.
"Third plate. Let him say the number. Let him say it."
"Mr. Beckman," said the chair. "I am an old woman, and I like to understand a thing before I fall in love with it."
"Walk me through how it stands up."
"Gladly."
"Perhaps Mr. Donnelly can ask the questions," Godfrey said, from the head of the room.
"Since he's so full of them this morning."
Eli stepped up to the table.
He didn't feel triumphant.
He felt tired.
"Third plate," he said. "The column on the east side, near the stair landing. C7."
