Chapter 28: The Gala
The awards were held in a hotel ballroom with chandeliers the size of cars.
Three hundred architects sat at round tables in black tie, with the sleeves of their jackets already regretted.
Eli wore a rented tuxedo that fit Declan better than it fit him.
Declan sat on his left, in his own, with a white carnation he hadn't chosen, and a face like a closed ledger.
Joan sat on Eli's right, in her good navy dress, with her curled left hand on the linen.
Maggie sat beyond her, in green, eating the bread basket one roll at a time.
"Godfrey's at table four," Maggie said, without moving her lips.
Eli didn't look.
He could see the table anyway, from the corner of his eye.
Godfrey wore white tie and a lavender bow, and the silver in his hair had been brushed until it shone.
A lawyer sat at his elbow, thin and bored.
Godfrey smiled and nodded at everyone who passed, and for the first ten minutes people nodded back.
Then the news moved through the ballroom the way news does, table by table, in whispers.
