Chapter 32: Listen
The first Tuesday in December the Fairmount lot was full of people in good coats.
Someone had laid plywood paths across the frozen gravel, and strung bunting from the chain-link in the library's blue and white.
A brass band of high-school kids played something that was nearly a march.
The old freight depot stood behind it all, rust-red, minding its own business.
Eli stood at the front beside six ceremonial shovels stuck in a pile of clean dirt.
A speech sat in his pocket that he'd rewritten four times.
His mother sat in the first row in her navy coat.
Maggie sat on one side of her and the board chair on the other.
The two of them had been talking since ten.
Eli had stopped trying to guess about what.
The man in the gold blazer was explaining to a reporter what a groundbreaking was, per se.
The tall woman partner stood at the back with the other three, in matching scarves, a quiet little wall of the firm.
Forty Lippincott staff stood along the fence, stamping their feet.
