Chapter 4: Skin

"Take your hand off mine, Donnelly," Declan said, "or move it somewhere useful."

Eli blinked.

Declan hadn't turned his head, and his voice was perfectly flat.

"That was a dare," said the voice in Eli's head, wrecked and fast. "That was a dare, wasn't it. Say yes. Say yes, you coward, say it with your mouth."

"Somewhere useful," Eli said. "Like where?"

"I'm a respectable person. I'm a respectable person. His mouth. His mouth. His mouth."

"Your tie," Declan said, to the wall. "It's crooked."

"It's not."

"Then you'd better come and check."

Eli should have been using this to win.

Every hour of the last two days he could have sat across from Declan and plucked his best ideas out of his head before he drew them, and walked into the seat on a stolen lead.

He had sat in this room for four hours with the best cheat any rival ever had.

And all he'd done with it was wonder what Declan's hands felt like.

He got up out of his chair.

He walked around the plot table, and Declan finally turned his head and looked up at him.

His eyes were so dark they looked wet.

Eli took the hand he still held and pulled Declan out of his chair by it.

Declan came up tall and stiff, and Eli backed him against the edge of the table.

Rolls of tracing paper tipped and rolled away behind them across the floor.

"Donnelly," Declan said. "This is a violation of firm policy."

"Then tell me to stop."
