Chapter 17: The March Rides

Torin lifted Wynne out of the bed blanket and all, and she wrapped both arms around his neck without being asked.

"Not the stair," I said.

"There is a servants' stair behind the washstand wall," he said. "I saw the draft in the candle when we came in."

"Then why did you not tell me?"

"I was busy being arrested."

I found the panel by feel, and it swung open on a black well of narrow steps.

The nurse woke with a shriek as the first boots hit the gallery door.

"Go," I said.

Torin ducked into the dark with my daughter on his shoulder.

I stayed on the threshold a heartbeat longer and faced the door.

It splintered inward, and the chamberlain came through it with a seal in his fist and his mouth open to shout.

I put my palm toward him and let the fire out.

It was not wild this time.

A bar of gold light stood across the doorway at the height of my chest, hot enough to blister the paint on the frame.

The chamberlain stopped so hard that the men behind him crashed into his back.

"In the name of the Regent..." he began.

"Tell the Regent his niece is on her way to see him," I said. "At noon, as agreed."

I stepped back through the panel and shut it on their faces.
