Chapter 20: The Crown Hall
The Ember Hall was empty, and the heartstone blazed.
Gold light climbed the black marble pillar and spilled across the floor.
It lit the faces on the walls, my father's and his father's, back to the first king.
The candles stood at attention, every flame bent toward the stone.
I walked down the long aisle, and the hall began to fill behind me.
Lords of Halvard came first, quietly, with their heads down.
Then came the March riders, with mud on their boots and iron on their hips.
After them came the crowd from the Dragon's Court, pushing in through the great doors until the galleries creaked.
Behind them, the dragon laid her head across the threshold of the hall, filling the doorway with black scale and one patient gold eye.
I did not look back.
I stopped before the pillar and held out my left hand.
