Chapter 4: Twenty-Six Guns

By noon, twelve more Americans had landed in Naples.

Nico came into the study with his phone held out.

"Your husband's underboss just walked out of arrivals with a dozen men in leather jackets. They're in the cafe on Piazza dei Martiri, taking up four tables."

"Is Dominic with them?"

"No. He's at the hotel. Your friend Gemma is."

"She's not my friend."

"Good," Nico said. "Because I'd hate to say what I'm about to say. Two of my boys were having coffee at the next table. Somebody called one of them a Neapolitan monkey."

I stood up.

"Where are your boys now?"

"Still at the table. Holding their cups very carefully."

I took my father's black coat from the hook.

It was too big for me, and it smelled like him.

"Donna," Aurelio said. "Let me send someone."

"Send everyone," I said. "Behind me."

The piazza was full of Saturday shoppers, kids with ice cream, a woman selling lemons from a cart.

Four tables outside the cafe had been pushed together.

Twelve Ferraro men sat around them with their jackets open.

Across a strip of cobbles, fourteen of Nico's men stood leaning on a stone wall with their arms folded.

Nobody had drawn a gun yet.

The air felt like the second before a window breaks.

At the head of the Americans' tables sat a thickset man of fifty with silver in his hair and a gold seahorse pin on his collar.

Dominic's underboss.

He had eaten at my kitchen table every Christmas for five years.

He had praised my cannoli and asked for the recipe twice.

Gemma sat at his right hand with her coffee cup in both hands.

When he saw me coming, he put down his fork and smiled.

"Mrs. Ferraro. They told me you'd gone native."
