Chapter 6: Forty Pictures of Olive Oil

I didn't raise the gun.

I leaned against the door frame with it hanging at my side and said, "Looking for something, Gemma?"

She didn't jump.

That was the first thing I noticed.

She finished the photo she was taking, lowered the phone, and turned to me with a hand on her chest.

"Ilaria. God. You scared me."

"I can see that."

"Dominic's lighter." She laughed, small and embarrassed. "He dropped it somewhere between the dinner and the car. It's his father's. He'd never forgive himself."

"In my father's desk."

"I thought he might have set it down in here. I'm so sorry, I know it's late. I couldn't sleep."

She said it all very sweetly.

Her pale eyes stayed on the revolver the whole time.

"The gate man logged you out at half past ten," I said.

"He let me back in when I explained."

"Which gate man?"

"The tall one. I didn't catch his name."

"We only have two. Neither one is tall."

For a second, her face went completely blank.

Then the smile came back.

"I must be thinking of someone else."

"You must."

I crossed the room and pulled the desk drawer shut, and she moved her hip out of the way.

"Show me your phone," I said.

"Why?"

"I'd like to look at the lighter."

"There's no lighter in my phone."

"Then you won't mind."

She held my eye.

Then, slowly, she held out the phone, and I took it.

The screen was black.

"Passcode?"

"I'm sure you'll figure it out."

"I will," I said. "But not tonight."

I put the phone in the pocket of my father's cardigan.

Gemma's hand twitched at her side, and I watched it, and she saw me watch it.

"I'll want that back," she said.
