Chapter 9: The Oath in My Father's Hand
Dominic's POV
The vault was behind the study, down the stone steps, and it smelled like cold iron and candle wax.
I kept one hand against the wall on my way down to steady myself.
My shoulder was on fire, and the arm Ila had stitched was strapped across my chest.
She walked ahead of me in my coat.
Not mine. Her father's.
She looked like she had always belonged in it.
Nico came behind me, close, with a hand near his belt, and I understood that I was being walked to my own execution politely.
Aurelio stopped at a table in the middle of the room and laid the leather book on it.
"Signor Ferraro. You will stand there."
"I'm standing."
"You will not interrupt until I finish."
"I don't take orders from..."
"Dominic," Ila said.
I shut my mouth.
She hadn't raised her voice. She never had to.
Aurelio opened the book to a page marked with a strip of black silk.
At the top, in thick brown ink, a little gold seahorse had been pressed into the paper.
I knew the shape.
It was on my lapel.
It was on every man in my family, and it had been since I was a boy.
My father handed those pins out.
When I asked where they came from, he said, an old friend's gift.
"Read it," Aurelio said.
I bent over the page.
The hand was shaky and enormous. It dragged across the lines.
My father's hand.
I felt the floor move.
It said that on the fourth of November, six years ago, when the Calabrese had burned our warehouse, killed my uncles and put a price on every Ferraro head, Don Sorrentino of Naples had sent money, men and a ship.
It said he had asked for nothing.
It said my father, dying, had asked what he could give in return, and the Don had said, your name.
Then the oath.
I read it twice, and then a third time, because my mind kept refusing the words.
