Chapter 15: Wanted
Reuben did not say a word about the banner.
He set the phone face down on the floor and pulled the blanket back over my shoulder.
"It's three in the morning," he said. "They can wait until I've finished with you."
He finished with me twice more before the window went gray.
At six, the phone buzzed again, and this time we both read it.
The staff app had a new notice, pinned to the top of every screen in the building.
It had my badge photo on it, the one with the cap and the flat mouth.
WANTED FOR THEFT: LUCY BIRCH. $5,000 REWARD. REPORT TO ACTING DIRECTOR OF SECURITY.
Underneath, in smaller letters, was a name I'd seen on the front-row envelope.
It was Desmond's cousin.
"Acting director," Reuben said. "Leigh wasted no time."
"Leigh did this at three a.m. and then killed your badge to make room."
"She's been planning that chair for months." He was already pulling on his shirt, minus one button. "Finnegan wants his own man at security before the gala. Somebody who signs without a note."
"Then you can't go in."
"If I don't, the night crew walks into that building with nobody on the door who knows their names." He looked at me. "You're not walking in at all."
"Dot called while you were in the shower."
"She called my phone?"
"She called the burner Leigh doesn't know about. Dot says come through the dock, under the sheets, and she'll take the rest."
He shut his eyes.
"Under the sheets."
"I'll be in a laundry cart, Reuben. I've been on my knees in worse places."
