Chapter 24: Rotten Ice
By morning the lake looked like a sheet of dirty glass.
Meltwater stood in pools along the shore, and the black cracks had spread until the whole surface was a map.
The Beta's hunters worked down the bank with orange tape and stakes.
They were clearing the shore path, the dock and the sauna.
The sauna sat on posts over the water, and the posts would not hold.
"Everyone back past the second flag," the Beta kept calling. "Nobody on the ice, nobody on the dock."
I walked down with the clinic bag over my shoulder.
My Winter seat had a clinic under it, and a clinic had to be ready for people who fell in.
Halvard walked beside me, reading the water.
"Another day and a half before the shelf lets go," he said. "Maybe two."
"Can the cabin stay?"
"Until it can't."
We came around the bend, and I stopped.
Lucan sat on the last dry rock at the edge of the shore, not ten feet from the rotten ice.
