Chapter 10: Minnie's POV
Minnie's POV
I stood outside the ICU doors at a quarter to six with two coffees going cold in my hands.
I'd been there since four.
Nolan worked nights, and I had checked.
I knew when his shift ended because I had spent three weeks learning when everyone's shift ended.
My phone held nineteen missed calls from my husband.
I hadn't opened a single voicemail.
The glass doors slid apart, and Nolan came out in blue scrubs with his bandage gone gray.
He stopped dead when he saw me.
I held out a coffee.
He didn't take it.
"I'm not here to fight," I said. "I came to give you this."
I held out a gray flash drive on my palm.
"Every video, every date, every photograph. My notes on the hotel. Slade's schedule. You don't need me for any of it."
"Why would I need you?"
"You won't. I'll delete your number, and I'll stay away from the hospital and the street and your sister." My voice stayed level, and I was proud of that. "You can take them down by yourself."
He looked at the drive.
"You're offering to disappear."
"I'm offering you what you asked for. No lies."
"That's not what I asked for."
I didn't know what to say to that.
I had practiced for hours, and none of it had been that.
A horn honked behind us, and a city bus swung into the stop.
Maggie came down the steps in her CTA jacket with a travel mug in one hand.
She had pulled the bus into the bay with the doors open and left a full lane waiting.
