Chapter 12: Hotdish
Jens didn't drop off the truck.
He called the garage, said Big Walrus had a "mechanical issue," and drove me to St. Mary's in it.
We parked a city plow in the obstetrics lot at 7:40 in the morning.
Nobody said anything.
The OB put the pictures up on the screen and pointed with her pen.
A was big. B was big.
C was tucked in behind them, smaller, curled up.
"C's getting less than her share from the placenta," she said. "It happens with three. It's not an emergency yet. I want it to stay that way."
"Her?" I said.
The doctor stopped.
"I'm sorry. You didn't want to know?"
"No, I do." I looked at the comma on the screen. "I do."
Jens was holding my hand so hard my rings would have cut me, if I still wore any.
"What does she need?" he asked.
"She needs her mother lying down," the doctor said. "Off your feet. No stairs if you can help it. No driving. No standing at press conferences. Scans twice a week."
She looked at me over her glasses.
"Yes, I watch the news."
"For how long?"
"Until I say so."
"I have a city to run a map for."
"Run it lying down," the doctor said.
The stairs at the duplex were the first problem.
Jens solved that in an hour.
He carried my laptop, my pillows and my clothes downstairs and made up his own bed for me.
"Where are you going to sleep?"
"The couch."
"You're six-four. The couch is five feet."
"I've slept in a plow cab in a whiteout. The couch is a palace."
By noon, word had gotten around the garage.
By three, the hotdish started.
The woman with the frost-burned cheeks came first, with tater-tot hotdish in a pan the size of a sled.
Then the driver from Route 6, with his wife's wild rice soup.
