Chapter 21: Power Out

I didn't answer her right away.

"You don't have to decide tonight," I said.

"I decided at the rink." She smoothed his hair with one finger. "I just didn't know it yet."

I called my lawyer at seven in the morning. She said noon.

Karin came at ten.

She came with a dozen white roses and a photographer, who stayed in the hallway taking pictures of the roses going in.

Her chief of staff shut the door behind her.

Then she set the roses on the windowsill and stopped smiling.

She looked at me in the plastic chair, and then at Marit in the bed.

"I heard about the ballroom," she said. "Four hundred donors watched my communications director walk out on my speech."

"I was in labor," Marit said.

"You were making a point." Karin took off her gloves, one finger at a time. "So let me make mine. Your position is eliminated, effective today. Your city phone is already off. Your badge doesn't open anything."

"Fine," she said.

"And I hear you'd like to sign a statement."

The room went cold.

"Let me tell you what that statement is, Marit, since you never think ahead," Karin said. "It's a confession. Forging a public official's signature on a government document. That's a felony in Minnesota."
