Chapter 24: The Hearing
The primary was the next day.
I voted at the church on Fourth Street with C asleep in a sling on my chest.
That night the results came in on Jens's kitchen radio, between a weather report and a polka.
Sandvik first. Thorsby second. The two of us, alone on the November ballot.
The drivers honked in a line down the block.
C slept through all of it.
I didn't sleep at all, because of a court date eight days away.
The hearing was in a small courtroom on the fourth floor of the county building, a hallway down from where I'd gotten divorced.
Wood paneling. A flag. A judge with reading glasses on a chain.
Karin sat at the first table in her charcoal suit with two lawyers from a firm in Minneapolis.
She'd brought a framed photo of the triplets.
I didn't know where she'd gotten it.
Then I did. The NICU had posted it on their wall, with my permission, for a fundraiser.
My lawyer and I sat at the second table.
Marit sat behind me in the first row, with her son asleep in a car seat at her feet.
