Chapter 29: First Snow

Jens looked at me for a long moment on the porch.

Then he nodded once, like he did on the radio when he'd been given a route.

"Election night," he said. "I'll put it on Tova's chart."

"Don't you dare."

"Too late. She's going to find the nameplate anyway. She finds everything."

He was right.

She found it the next morning in his sock drawer and screwed it to the mailbox before school with a butter knife.

Then she took it down again, because he said it was a surprise, and screwed it back on the inside of her bedroom door.

The weather service started talking about snow on the last Friday of October.

By Sunday they were sure.

The first real storm of the winter, four to six inches, starting the night before the election.

My phone rang at seven on Monday morning.

It was the woman with the frost-burned cheeks.

"Map Lady," she said. "We had a meeting."

"Who's we?"

"All of us. Every driver on the city side." I could hear the break room microwave behind her. "Tomorrow we plow it right. Hospitals first, then the hills, then every road to every polling place. Your order. Your map. Live, all day, so everybody can watch it."
