Chapter 30: From the Plow
Lakeside, precinct three.
Sandvik 412. Thorsby 97.
The garage didn't cheer.
It was one precinct, and these people knew weather.
They knew what one inch at eight o'clock means at midnight.
Then Duluth Heights came in, where the woman had stood in her unplowed street with my map on her phone.
Sandvik 681. Thorsby 140.
Somebody whooped near the salt dome and was shushed by four people at once.
Tova leaned down from Jens's shoulders and whispered in his ear.
"Is that good?"
"That's good," he whispered back.
"How good?"

She wrote it down on her clipboard, on top of his head.
By nine-thirty, a third of the precincts were in.
Woodland Avenue. West Duluth. The flats along the lake.
The orange line on the screen stayed above the gray one in every single one.
At 10:05, the paper called it.
The reporter got the text before anyone else, because she was standing right beside me.
She looked at her phone.
Then she looked up at me.
