Chapter 12: What He Remembers

The whole auditorium turned and looked at Drew.

He stood up in the row behind me and put his hands in his jacket pockets.

"I saw Keeley and the others head for the school gates after Keira left the gym," he said. "I thought there might be trouble, so I followed with my phone out. That's all."

"That's not all," Keeley said. "He knew."

"I knew you were angry at her, and I knew it was getting worse."

"Why would you care?"

"Because she called in your name on the highway, and you still came after her," he said, quietly. "That seemed like something someone should write down."

The vice chair rapped the table with his knuckles.

"Miss Satterlee, that's enough. Take your seat."

Keeley looked around the room for one friendly face and found none.

Her father came down the aisle from the side door, a heavy man in a work shirt I had never seen before, and took her by the elbow.

He walked her out without saying a word.

The meeting went on for another ten minutes, and I did not hear any of it.

Tegan caught my sleeve as the crowd broke up, and my mother wheeled her toward the door with a promise to buy her a milkshake.

"Go on," my mother said to me. "I'll get her home."

I found Drew in the parking lot, standing beside his truck with his keys in his hand.

The sun was down and the streetlights were coming on, one at a time, the same yellow as the ones at the school gates.
