Chapter 4: Three Statements
The vice principal gave us a small office behind the testing hall, with a table, five plastic chairs and a box of tissues nobody touched.
Keeley sat across from me with a hospital bracelet on her wrist.
Brent sat beside her with eight stitches in his forehead and his eyes on the table.
Nobody sat next to me, and I did not mind.
"I want each of you to tell me what happened on that bus," the vice principal said. "One at a time, and without interrupting."
Keeley went first.
She had her voice back, and it was soft and shaking in the right places.
"Keira stood up before the doors opened," she said. "She told us the school wouldn't help, and that a mile was nothing, and that we'd be fine if we stuck together. We believed her."
I looked at her for a long moment.
Those had been Keeley's words, from the first time around, with my name pasted over her own.
"That's what she said," Brent muttered. "Word for word."
"I never stood up," I said. "I stayed in my seat."
"You were just scared to come with us."
"I was scared of the storm, Keeley. You should have been too."
The vice principal raised her hand. "Miss Haverty, you'll have your turn."
I took out my phone and laid it on the table with the video ready.
"It's seven forty-one on the recording," I said. "I started it as the doors opened. You can hear the driver's order and every name I gave. You can see the time of the call to 911 as well."
